New Larger Chessboard Design

Oksana and Robert with the new larger chessboard

In a brief update to a finished project. The Touch Notational Chess Pieces were recently created on a larger format in 30mm diameter (White) and 30mm Square (Black) resting on magnetised board of smooth Acrylic Plastic white Squares, and slightly raised fine grained Wooden ones. Basically its a Sports model Chess Design with its touch design functioning with similar principles to Moon, although with fewer characters on a chess set, the contrast between the pieces could be higher, allowing something akin to the immediacy of Road Signs. Robert was teaching the basics of it to Oksana over the weekend with Myself at one of the lakeside tables at the Wire mill water ski club. Although Okasna seems to be a fast learner, replying with the Sicilian immediately after Robert Played E4. She is shown below in action as well as an additional photo of the set taken by Alan Bond in his Studio in Sussex. These larger working prototypes are 45cm x 45cm square in total and 3cm high, and More information can be found on Linked in as well as contacting myself direct.

Looking for interested Industry Partners

Chessboard

Robert and Jane have finished there project and both are now looking for Industry to jump on board with them and run further with it. It took ages getting the design just right being robust Touch Based Chess board designed with great care for Contrast and immediacy of piece recognition. You can read the whole story around it and the details on Robert J Meldrums public facebook blog on it, as well as looking at his website www.robertmeldrumart.com

New tac-tile chess board

I have been working with Robert Meldrum in developing a Chess Board that may be of benefit to unsighted players. Each Chess piece has been economically designed and engineered to the millimetre to provide immediacy of recognition and contrast. The pieces are called French Defence Notation, and are designed to be scanned by the finger tip from above while also differentiated at the sides where they are grasped, as opposing players of Squares and Circles.

Traditional pieces were used for inspiration although it is very abstract, and flat, and in its current format magnetised, but the pieces are also not intended to distract from the game itself. Additional information is on his website, www.robertmeldrumart.com, look for the link with Manta Ray included on it.

Robert Aims to support organisations that support real innovation like R.P. fighting blindness and would be happy to work with Quality Chess Companies in its further manufacture in the understanding that they too would contribute to them.

Shown below is an Image of a Chess Set, known as a Manta Ray board. Its 28 by 28 by 2 centre meters and have contrasting squares of Acrylic and Metal.

Manta Ray board

Important: Robert has made a series of Chess Sculptures. These are not to be confused with F.D. notation or the Manta Ray board. They are separate Items. One of them has been offered to R.P. for the funding of there projects but the sales of other paintings or Sculptures will contribute to this project.

New Chess Project with Robert Meldrum

I have been recently helping a friend of mine who is a Painter called Robert Meldrum. He made a series of Sculptures based on Chess sets last summer and now he is developing them with industry as a very serious item that can be used for both sighted and non sighted players. I have been helping him along with another friend in testing them at various stages as well as some transcription work. There very non academic, and they are designed as the sort of board you would want to relax with at a beach rather than a cafe, but there design is showing some innovation. They have gone beyond there original formats and are now including a new robustly designed and immediate textual notational language embedded in the pieces format as well as original ideas involving the use of contrast taken from the sculptures. Its exciting and I will post an up date here on this project in a couple of months time.

For now he has offered the Sale of one of his paintings, called Volcano, exclusively on BTS (Braille Transcription Service), with the funds for its sale going straight into this chess project. Volcano is a collage painting and uses a variety of different materials. The Volcano is shown situated on a beach side and is built out of foam board attached proud to a simple plywood base cut to classic dormant swooping volcano shape. Below this he has used astral turf which has been recessed into the plywood and partly filled with plaster of Paris. This has dried reducing the amount of astral turf visible creating an arid landscape below. (the effect in itself is like layers of a cake which also gives it a geographic illustrative feel). Next is the sea and for this he has used a thin strip of blue pool cover. This has a nice bubbled pattern and also gives the ocean an association to the effects of global warming. Below this is the flat sea bed stretching all the way down to the bottom of the painting where finally a recessed layer of bright orange paint depicts a layer of magma going right across the bottom of the composition. The painting is 130 x 180cm and will need very secure hanging as well as care when being moved. It is a smaller version of a larger Volcano picture that was built as part of an installation involving sculptures of Squids as well, that is also shown in an illustration.

The painting is available at an exclusive price of £6,000 GBP pounds and clients are welcome to come and check it out by getting in touch directly with me.

Below is an image of the Volcano painting as well as an additional photo showing the larger version with the Sculptures of Squids. Please do get in touch while the offer stands and check back soon for future updates on this chess project.
